André's Tree

Playing a round of golf in Gunnersbury Park, always lovely to come to at the first tee, André’s memorial tree.

  2. When Gordon and I were talking to the parks people about where the tree could go they said that although where we were thinking of was currently a golf course, it would soon be transformed into an arboretum.

As most people reading this will probably know, it was planted in 1999, on André's birthday, the 3rd of December. As time went on and the golfing continued I became impatient for the transformation to take place. The tree was young and I was worried about incompetent golfers hitting the tree.

There's still no sign of any changes happening, but I've now changed my mind. Knowing that TG and Jim, and any other people who knew and loved André, have the pleasure of going past his tree at the first tee makes me hope it stays as it is. And it has steadily been growing big and strong, no signs of the golf going on around it doing it any harm.
